JIYC Race Team Overview

Our Junior Sailing Race Team is dedicated to fostering a love for sailing while developing the skills and confidence needed for competitive racing. Open to youth sailors of all skill levels, the team provides a structured environment where sailors learn advanced techniques, racing strategies, and teamwork.

Under the guidance of experienced coaches and the Director, participants engage in weekly practices, regattas, and events, building both their technical abilities and sportsmanship. The program focuses on techniques, sailing fundamentals, and leadership, ensuring that each sailor grows both on and off the water.

With access to top-tier equipment and a supportive community, the Jr. JIYC Sailing Race Team prepares young athletes to excel in regional and national competitions, all while enjoying the thrill of the sport in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

This is a new team with new guidance, so there is a lot of fine tuning to come with this team. But we have the backing from the YC and most importantly, the parents!

2024 - 2025 Winter Schedule

Regattas between Nov through Feb

SailJax 2024 - December 14th in Jacksonville, FL
Valentine's Day Regatta, Feb 9th in St. Pete's, FL (USODA Qualifier)

Practice Schedule

The JIYC RT practice schedule between Nov through Feb will be done clinic style and we are planning to have 4 total. This means that it will be one day events on a Saturday from 11a-3p and will have a fee. The fee is still being determined, but it either will be a one-time flat fee or per session fee.

A Few Things about the Team and JIYC

Equipment

To start off, if you have your own personal equipment, then you are 100% able to keep it here at the property during the active sailing seasons (Fall, Spring, and Summer). All cost however that is associated with your personal equipment will be your financial responsibility. If you need something or help locating an item, the Sailing Director may be able to assist.

IF YOU DO NOT OWN AN OPTI,
You are more than welcome to still come and participate as a part of the team. JIYC owns 5 top tier Opti's that are well maintained and are race ready. The boats are available for charter for an entire season at a flat fee of $500. You are allowed to use the boats for one entire season such as Fall, Spring, and Summer before we ask that you purchase your own opti. Facebook and FB Marketplace is a great way to start the search and will have an opti in whatever price range you are looking for.

If you are looking for a racing opti, used RWB boats range from the $1500 - $3000 depending on the year and quality. Green Fleet sailors do not need something that nice and a good green fleet opti will range between $800 - $1250. However you decide to purchase, you can always ask the Sailing Directors advice on will be best for their jr. sailor. I do not recommend yet that you buy a brand new opti unless you want to. Those will range between $4000-$6000 depending who you buy from.
